Nader Twal was born in the United States, but his Jordanian parents moved the family to the Middle East when he was two years old. When Nader was 13, his parents relocated the family back to the United States to provide better opportunities for their children. While in college at UC Davis, Nader spent a summer in San Jose working with students who were underserved and underprivileged, and this experience changed the trajectory of his life. Believing education is the bedrock of democracy, Nader served nine years as a classroom teacher, two years as a site-level program coordinator and teacher leader, and five years as High School Central Office Linked Learning Coordinator in Long Beach, California. The 2003 Milken Educator Award recipient brings a unique and comprehensive body of experience to K-12 systems-level change management in his current role as program administrator in the Office of Curriculum, Instruction, and Professional Development in Long Beach Unified School District – the third largest in California.
